Hazrat Muawiyah (Radhiyallahu Anhu)

Q: I have some questions regarding Hazrat Muawiyah (Radhiyallahu Anhu).

  1. Was he one of the scribes who wrote down the Qur’an or simply one of the scribes who dictated Nabi sallallahu alayhi wa salam’s letters to other rulers?
  2. Is it true that there is a hadeeth in Saheeh Bukhari narrating how Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasalam) explicitly cursed him?
  3. Are there also hadeeths narrating how Muawiyah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) will be denied water from Nabi (Sallahu Alayhi Wasalam’s) hands at Al-Kawthar and how Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasalam) cursed him because he (Radhiyallahu Anhu) kept on eating eating while Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasalam) was summoning him?
  4. Was his sister one of the Ummul Mu’mineen (Radhiyallahu anhum)? Did Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasalam) make dua that he would be a great king?

A:

  1. Yes. He was a scribe of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) who recorded the wahi of the Qur’an.
  2. Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) did not curse him.
  3. Hazrat Muaawiyah (Radiyallahu Anhu) was an eminent Sahabi of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) made special dua for him. اللهم اجعله هاديا مهديا – O Allah make Hazrat Muaawiyah (Radiyallahu Anhu) a guide for this ummah and keep him steadfast on hidaayat. Him being deprived from drinking water from the Mubaarak hands of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) at the Haud-e-Kawthar is unfounded and baseless. As far as the Hadith which explains that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) called for him and he delayed in responding, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) did not curse him, instead the words Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) used on that occasion was a dua for him. This has been explained by the author of Majmau Bihaaril Anwaar and other commentators of Hadith. For one to confine the meaning of these words to a curse and ignore the other possible meanings and connotations is either due to lack of competency in the Arabic language or either due to being prejudice.
  4. Yes his sister was Ummul Mu’mineen, Hazrat Umme Habiba (Radiyallahu Anha).
  5. Yes, Nabi (Sallallahu Alyhi Wasallam) prophesied the leadership of Hazrat Muaawiyah (Radiyallahu Anhu) in his mubaarak Ahaadith.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
