Performing Fardh Salaah behind someone performing Sunnah or Nafl Salaah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: If one wants to pray a Fardh Salah in Jamaat, can one join a person who is praying a Sunnah Salah? What if one joins a person who is praying a Sunnah salah, but you mistakenly assumed that he is praying a Fardh?

A:

  1. Performing fardh behind someone who is performing sunnah is impermissible. Hence the Salaah will be invalid.
  2. After one comes to know that one has performed the fardh behind someone performing nafil or sunnat, one should repeat the fardh.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
