Folding of the pants above the ankles when performing salaah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I have been told by a friend of mine that folding of the pants above the ankles when one reads salaah is a sin and that it is better to let the pants hang below the ankles. He mentions that there is a hadith of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) in Sahih Muslim that advises against folding of the hair and garments in salaah. Kindly advise if this is correct?

A: The Hadith that the person is referring to appears in Abu Dawood Shareef. However the person has quoted the Hadith out of context. In the time of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) the Sahabah used to perform their Salaah upon sand in the Musjid. Some of them due to not wanting their clothing to touch the ground began folding their clothing (sleeves, etc.). Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) commanded them to allow their clothing to touch the ground and not to fold it or hold it back. However this hadith does not refer to the pants or trousers flowing below the ankles. As far the pants or trousers are concerned, there are authentic explicit Ahaadith which show that the one who wears his pants below the ankles will be punished in the hereafter.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
