Making Jamaat at home

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: If the men of a household pray their salaah in their own house with jamaat, is this wrong? I understand they wouldn’t get the reward of going to the masjid, but if they make a habit of praying their prayer at home with jamaat, is this a sin?

A: This is not right. Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) wanted to burn the houses of those people who did not attend the musjid congregational namaaz. Attending the jamaat in the musjid is very much emphasized. Some ulama are of the opinion that it is wajib. If you are living at a distance more than 1 kilometer from the musjid where the azaan is not audible without the use of a microphone then performing the namaaz in congregation in such a place will be in order. It is no longer emphasized for such a person to attend the musjid jamaat.
