Performing waajib qurbaani on behalf of someone else without their permission

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: A son makes quarbani for his mother living abroad. That night he phones his mother and informs her that he has made quarbani for her. The mother is delighted, expresses gratitude and thanks the son profusely. Is the quarbani valid or was it necessary to have first obtained the mother’s prior consent?

Bismillaah

A: In a Waajib Qurbaani, it is necessary to take permission from the one you are doing Qurbaani on behalf of prior to the Qurbaani. If permission was not sought before the Qurbaani, the slaughtered animal will not suffice for the waajib Qurbaani and will have to be repeated.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
