Q: Is it valid to pray behind an Imam whose prayer you consider invalid so long as he considers his prayer valid, such as a Imam who does wipe over regular cotton socks? Is there a position, even a weaker one that what matters is the imaams validity?
A: According to the four imaams of fiqh, masah on cotton socks is not valid. If the masah is not valid then the wudhu is incomplete and if the wudhu is incomplete then the salaah will not be valid.

ولا يجوز المسح على الجوربين عند أبي حنيفة والشافعي إلا أن يكونا مجلدين وهو أحد قولي مالك ولمالك قول آخر لا يجوز المسح على الجوربين وإن كانا مجلدين (الإستذكار 2/253)
قال أحمد : في المسح على الجوربين بغير نعل إذا كان يمشي عليهما ويثبتان في رجليه فلا بأس وفي موضع قال : يمسح عليهما إذا ثبتا في العقب وفي موضع قال : إن كان يمشي فيه فلا ينثني فلا بأس بالمسح عليه فإنه إذا انثنى ظهر موضع الوضوء ولا يعتبر أن يكونا مجلدين (المغني 1/331)

Q: What if the imaam does follow the view of those mujtahid Imaams who do allow masah on cotton socks such as Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Qayyim, Ibn Hazm etc, and the standing comitee of Saudi Arabia scholars as Shayk al Uthaymin and others. Is it valid to pray behind such Imaam?
A: Ibne Taymiyyah, Ibne Qayyim, Ibne Hazm and Uthaymeen were not Mujtahids. Hence it will be impermissible for one to independently follow them especially when it opposes the Mazhab of the four Imaams of fiqh and the majority scholars of the ummah.

Q: As you know, Imaam Abu Hanifa (rahmatullaahi ‘alayh) first rejected mash on socks (other then leather) and later returned to the opinion of his pupils Imaam Abu Yusuf and Imaam Muhammad ash-Shaybani (rahmatullaahi ‘alayhimaa), so he did mash on his socks. However, what kind of socks? Is it okay to use socks who are made of 50% wool and 50% polypropylene (the so-called “Norwegian socks”) for example these here: http://www.sokkenmarkt.nl/noorse-sok-zeer-zwaar-supersterk-50-wol-per-pa… and are quite thick?
The website does describe the socks as ”very heavy superstrong” and ”warm, strong, durable” and ”high quality yarns and an invisible reinforced toe and heel” and ”less to wear liable”.

A: According to Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) and his illustrious students Imaam Abu Yusuf and Imaam Muhammad (rahimahumallah), masah is only permissible on non-leather socks on condition that they are thakheen (thick/durable). Thakheen refers to such thick socks which have all the attributes of leather socks (mozahs) in it (i.e.they are not the normal nylon and cotton socks worn nowadays). The validity of masah on thakheen socks is dependent on the following three conditions:
- It is possible to walk in such socks for more than three miles without them tearing (i.e. walking without wearing shoes).
- They must be of a non-porous nature.
- They must remain firm on the foreleg without being tied with laces, elastic, etc. (i.e. they should not slip down as ordinary socks do).

فإنا نقول بذلك لأنا لا نرى بأسا بالمسح على الجوربين إذا كانا صفيقين قد قال ذلك أبو يوسف ومحمد (شرح معاني الآثار 1/71)
