Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: After having a baby, you are on your periods for 40 days. Does that mean that its not allowed to read namaz for that time period?

Bismillaah

A: As long as she is in nifaas (post natal bleeding) she will be excused from Salaah. The maximum period of nifaas is forty days. If the bleeding stops before forty days, she should make ghusl and commence performing Salaah.
