Itr of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Can you give me any/all information regarding the attar of Rasullulah sallahu-alaihi wassallam? Mainly what they were made of? How was it worn, on the body direct or on the clothes? The benefits and the proper pronunciation? Is there a book available in English on the subject?

Bismillaah

A: There are many Ahaadith that are reported regarding the itr of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). A few Ahaadith are listed below:

Hadhrat Anas Radiayallahu Anhu reports that Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) had an itr bottle from which he would apply itr upon himself (Mishkaat pg 381)

Hadhrat A’isha Radiyallahu Anha narrates that Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) would not like to attend a gathering of his companions without applying itr. (Subul ul Hudaa War Rashaad 7/340)

Hadhrat A’isha Radiyallahu Anha was once asked regarding the itr of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), to which she replied “Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) would use musk and ambar”. (Sunan Nisaaiy 2/281)

In one Hadith it is reported that Hadhrat A’isha Radiyallahu Anha said that Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) loved to use musk and oudh. (Akhlaaqun Nabi Wa Aadaabihi #237)

In yet another Hadith it is reported that Hadhrat A’isha Radiyallahu Anha used to apply “zareerah” upon Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). (Saheeh Bukhari #5930)

Allamah Aini (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) and Haafidh Ibn Hajar (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) mantioned in their commentaries of Bukhaari Shareef that zareerah is a mixture of various perfumes. Allamah Nawawi (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) has written that zareerah is a fragrance that used to be brought from India. (Fathul Baari 10/371 and Umdatul Qaari 22/62)

Hadhrat Ibn Abbas (Radiyallahu Anhu) narrates that Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) loved oudh which was known as qumaara. Qumaara is a name of a type of oudh which grows in India. (Subul ul Hudaa War Rashaad 7/340)

There is sufficient literature in Arabic and Urdu on this topic. However for English literature you may refer to the book “The sublime conduct of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam”.
