3 Questions for Iftaa Department: Muslim Selling Beer Powder?

Q: I have 3 questions to the iftaa department. Please answer all questions in number form and with full explanation.

  1. Is it permissible for a muslim to sell beer powder? The names of the beer powder in question mnanti beer powder and kings brew beer powder. According to my little knowledge, these items can only be used to make beer and I have confirmed this with a lot of the black people. The company that is selling these products have ulema, huffaaz and many muslim staff who are trying to earn halaal rozi(income).

  2. What happens in the case where the muslim staff know its wrong and he does not inform his employers about it and turns a deaf ear over it? If he is working in the receiving or despatch,is it  permissible for him to receive or dispatch these items?

  3. If for example the company says that the profits from selling these items are totally seperate from the other items and it is taken out and spent in different avenues,is it still permissible? The way I ook at it,it is like contamination.

I would really appreciate a detailed explanation regarding this issue.

A:

  1. The principle of Shariah is that it is impermissible for one to sell an item that can only used for a haraam purpose. As for an item that has a dual or multiple purpose (i.e. it can be used for haraam as well as halaal), selling it will be permissible. However if one has knowledge that the person purchasing the item is purchasing it for a haraam purpose, then in that case selling the item to him will be impermissible.

  2. If the item can only be used for a haraam purpose, then it will be impermissible for one to deal in it (receiving or dispatching these items). He should respectfully explain to the employer the Shar’i law regarding dealing in such items.

  3. It is impermissible for a Believer to have any involvement in haraam. Even if the profits of such haraam items are given in sadaqah, the sin of dealing in them still remains.
