Sitting on a Chair and Performing Salaah or Eating

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Is it permissible to sit on the chair and perform salaah? If yes, what are the rules regarding sitting on the chair? If sitting on the chair and reading namaaz is permissible then is it permissible to sit on the chair and eat?

A: If a person cannot manage standing and is unable to perform sajdah by placing his head on the ground, then it will be permissible for him to sit on a chair and perform salaah. However if he is able to sit on the ground and perform salaah by sign then this will be better than sitting on a chair. (Haashiyat-ut-Tahtaawi `ala Maraaqiy-il-Falaah, 431)

It will be undesirable to sit on the chair and partake of meals if one can manage sitting on the floor.
