Women Attending the Musjid

Q: What is the ruling with regards to women attending the musjid? Are there any Ahaadith that state that we should not stop women from attending the musjid?

A: Women should not attend the Masjid for Salaah. It is Sunnah for them to perform their Salaah at home. Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) encouraged the women to perform their Salaah in the confines of the home. In the khilaafat of Hadhrat Umar Radiallahu anhu, when the fitnah was witnessed through women coming out of their homes, Hadhrat Umar Radiallahu Anhu stopped the women from attending the Salaah in the Masjid. Hadhrat ‘Aaisha Radiallahu Anha is reported to have said, “Had Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) been alive today and seen the condition of the women, he would have surely prohibited them from attending the Masaajid”.
