Keeping the names of the Ambiya, Sahaaba or the pious of the past

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I am waiting for my baby to come. I am in search of a name for the baby. I got a baby girl name manha meaning gift of Allah. For a baby boy I found the name Ayaan. The name Ayaan means gods gift in some sites and has the meaning long night, luck etc in other sites.  Some sites say it’s forbidden to name Ayaan for a Muslim because Ayaan in some other language means god of creation etc which contradicts Muslim belief. I selected this name because it has the meaning gods gift which is gift from Allah. Can I name my baby this name and I want to know the exact meaning of the name and does it mean the gift of god?

Bismillaah

A: We have not come across this name. It is best to keep the names of Ambiya, Sahaaba or the pious of the past.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
