Whose right is the mahr

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Who asks for the dowry the bride or the parents? If the parents, can the bride disagree with the parents?

Bismillaah

A: Mahr is the right of the bride. However, in the case where the bride accepts an amount of mahr which is lower than the amount that the women of her family generally receive (i.e. the women of her family who resemble her in age, beauty, town, being a virgin or widow, etc), then the family will have the right to object.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
