Alcohol and glycerine in lotion and soap

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Fatwa.org.au
_ What is the Shari’ah ruling on Cetearyl Alcohol, Dichlorobenzyl Alcohol and Glycerine (from animal source) used in Body lotion /cream / soap?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

_ If the alcohol in the lotion/cream/soap is made from grapes or dates, it will not be permissible to use the lotion/cream/soap. If the alcohol in the lotion/cream/soap is made from something else, it will be permissible to use the lotion/cream/soap — although it will be preferable to avoid such a product. (Takmila Fath al-Mulhim: 3/608)

It is not permissible to use products with glycerine from animal source, unless it can be established that the animal fat used in the process of making glycerine undergoes complete metamorphosis (istihaala).

And Allah knows best.
