Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullah,
I would like to ask you about the different views on contraception, what are the advantages and disadvantages? Is it allowed in Islam?
And what about abortion? is this allowed in Islam? what are the different views on this?

For both of my questions, which one would you advise is the best on to go for?

( I am asking you these question, to help me out on my research in Religious studies)

Answer:

If a doctor informs a lady that by falling pregnant she exposes herself to grave bodily harm and even death, or if by falling pregnant her breast feeding of the present baby might be affected by her milk either stopping or going bad, or if there is a fear that she will not be able to manage with a baby due to her hands being full in trying to raise her present children, then in this instance any form of contraception will be permissible

If she falls pregnant and there is a fear of one of the above situations taking place, it will be permissible to abort the foetus within 120 days of falling pregnant. Being pregnant for 120 days however nullifies the permissibility of abortion, even in the instance of the above fears. If she has an abortion after the 120th day of her falling pregnant, then irrespective of her reason for the abortion, she becomes guilty of first degree murder.
