Visiting the Grave

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Assalamualaikum,
When visiting a grave is it Sunnah to raise hands and read Surah al Fatihah and say Aameen and wipe the face with hands? or is it Bid’ah? this is very common in Turkey.
Please tell me what the Sunnah way is of visiting a grave.

Answer:

It will be permissible to raise ones hands and make Du’aa due to a Hadith in “Fathul Baari” v:11 pg:122 which proves Nabi (S.A.W) as raising his hands and making Du’aa for one of his companions after the funeral prayer. (Ahsanul Fataawaa vol.3 page.51)

The Sunnah method of visiting the grave is that as soon as one enters the grave yard one should greet the inhabitants of the graves. Thereafter you may sit by the head of the grave and read any amount of the Holy Qur’an and thereafter convey the reward to the deceased e.g.: AL-FATIHAH, Surah Yaseen , Surah Mulk, Surah Takaathur or Surah Ikhlaas 5;7 or 11 times or any amount of times you so desire.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best
