Question:
Salaam Moulana sahib,
Please could you take some of your time to answer my question?
I am 18 years of age. A few years ago I had an accident on a bus, it wasn’t anything major, anyway I claimed for compensation, when claming for compensation I told a few white lies
. for example I exaggerated the pain etc/the effect of the accident on me, now 2 years down the line, I am worrying that some of this money may be Haraam for me as I exaggerated
i don’t know what to do?? Should I repent for my mistake or should I give some of the money away? How much do I give away?
(I received £3.500) please help me as I intend to spend some of this money on a trip to Umrah Insha Allah and do not want it to be Haraam money just because of some little lies/exaggeration.

Answer:
In the question submitted, you yourself have acknowledged that you acquired this amount by not saying the truth. This implies that if you did not speak a lie, then you would not have attained this amount. Therefore this money is unlawful for you. Hence you may not use it for your personal needs or use it for any form of worship. As a result the money should be given in charity or used for some public welfare work.
