Masah of Neck in Wudhu

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Assalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullah:
Mufti Saheb, I wanted to know if you can give me detailed evidence supporting Masah on the neck during Wudhu. The reason is many brothers here in the United States say it is Bid’ah. I want to have some evidence to refute this claim.

Jazakallahu Khair

Answer:

It is Mustahab to make Masah on the neck. It is proven from many Ahadeeth. In the Ahadeeth the word “Qafaa” is used. It has been mentioned in one Hadith that Nabi (S.A.W) made Masah on his head using his hands; he started from the forehead to the back of the head until he reached the nape. (Sunan Ibni Dawood Vol. 1 Page 16- Sunan Ibne Majah, Page 34.)

The nape is the rear part of the neck and Masah is made only on a portion of the organ not the entire organ. From the aforementioned we find that Masah on the neck is supported by Ahadeeth.
