Making Salaam to Another

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Q1-IS IT ALRIGHT IF A  PERSON DOES NOT DO SALAAM TO SOME ONE WHO DOES NOT REPLY TO THE SALAAM, BECAUSE HE WILL BE SIN FULL  IF HE DOES NOT REPLY?

Answer:

It is Sunnah to make Salaam and it has been encouraged to do so in the Ahaadith.  It has been mentioned in a Hadith that:  “Those two Muslims who are not speaking to each other for some reason are given concession upto three days.  After the three days it will be demanded of them to reunite by making Salaam therefore whosoever makes Salaam first will be saved from the sin of breaking ties with a Muslim and the other will be sinful if he does not reply.”  It is understood from this Hadith that whenever there is an opportunity to make Salaam then one should do so even if the other person makes himself sinful by not replying.  One will be abandoning a Sunnah by not making Salaam when the opportunity arises.  (Mishkaat, Vol. 2, Page 428)
