Woman Covering Face Whilst in Ihraam

Assalāmu ‘alaykum wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,

Respected Mufti,

When I do umrah, I cover my face. Is it allowed to cover your face while doing Umrah? And if it is allowed then how should it be done?

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salām wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuhu,

1) It is compulsory for a woman to conceal her face even whilst in Iḥrām. However, nothing should touch a woman’s face during Iḥrām. Thus, the way of concealing the face is by wearing a cap and letting the hijāb hang. This is based on the following narration:


قال الإمام أبو داود حدثنا أحمد بن حنبل حدثنا هشيم أخبرنا يزيد بن أبى زياد عن مجاهد عن عائشة قالت كان الركبان يمرون بنا ونحن مع رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم- محرمات فإذا حاذوا بنا سدلت إحدانا جلبابها من رأسها إلى وجهها فإذا جاوزونا كشفناه. (أخرجه أبو داود في سنن أبى داود – (2 / 104)
