Piercing the ears and nose

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulUloomTT.net

Q. Ear piercing and nose piercing have been particularly widespread among women in India for wearing jewellery. Even Muslim women pierce in India. As a Muslim can I pierce my ears and nose (or only ears) for my daughter?

A. With respect to piercing the ears, this is allowed to be done one time. That is, one should not pierce an ear more than one time in order to wear a number of earrings as the unbelieving women do.

As for piercing the nose, many scholars have allowed it, seeing that there is no prohibition for it in the Shariah.

However, today, this act of piercing the nose has become a western culture and is practiced by unbelieving women. Hence, some scholars have considered it prohibited.

My personal opinion is that although there is an allowance to pierce the nose, it must not be done in order to follow the fashion and style of the western culture. It must also not be done in the manner others do by piecing a few areas on the nose. One should limit oneself to that which fulfills a need.

And Allah knows best.
