Being invited to a non HMC food invitation

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Being invited to a non HMC food invitation

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

If you are certain that the person who is inviting you is providing you haram food then it would not be permissible to accept such an invitation. However, if you are unsure whether the meat is halal or haraam then it will be best for you to refrain from eating at such a place. (See Fatawa Hindiyyah p.343 v.5)

It is mentioned in a hadith narrated by Numan bin Bashir Radiallahu Anhu that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said: “What is lawful is clear and what is unlawful is clear, but between them are certain doubtful things which many people do not recognize. He, who guards against doubtful things, keeps his religion and honour blameless. But he who falls into doubtful things, falls into what is unlawful, just as a shepherd who pastures his animals around a preserve will soon pasture them into it”. (Sahih Bukhari p.275 v.1 & Sahih Muslim)

Regarding your question, remember non-HMC food is not considered haram. Therefore, when one is inviting you to a non-HMC food invitation, it doesn’t mean you are being invited to an invitation where haram food is being served.

It is mentioned in a hadith narrated by Saaiduna Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said, “When one of you enter the house of your brother, he should eat from his food and should not ask and he should drink from his drink and should not ask.” (Sunan Baihaqi)
