Reading or looking at websites on the phone in the toilet

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Can we see any Islamic site on phone for example www.askimam.org while in the toilet? Sometimes any aayat or hadith sharif is written over there. Will it be right if we read them within our heart.

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

One should not read or look at various Islamic websites in the toilet as in all likelihood there will be Quranic verses and Hadiths and a Muslim is required not to take anything which contains the mention of Allah into the toilet.

It is mentioned in a hadith that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam used to take off his ring on which ‘Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah’ was engraved, when going to relieve himself. (Musnad Ahmad Sahih Ibn Hibban)

In general one should refrain from looking at websites on one’s phone or reading newspapers in the toilet, because when a person is in the toilet, he is required to be quiet, and not read or speak. It is also more appropriate to come out of the toilet as soon as one relieves himself, as it is disliked to remain inside the toilet more than the necessary time.
