How can you stop a Muslim drinking?
In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.
Alcohol is strictly forbidden in Islam. Allah (SWA) says in the Holy Quran:
‘O you who believe! Intoxicants and Gambling, Idols and Divining arrows are filth, works of Shaitan, therefore, abstain from it….’ (Surah Maaidah v.90)
The Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said, ‘Alcohol is the mother of all evils and it is the most shameful of evils’. (Sunan Ibn Majah p.241 v.2)
Saaiduna Anas Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet of Allah said ‘Allah’s curse falls on ten groups of people who deal with alcohol. The one who distils it, the one for whom it has been distilled, the one who drinks it, the one who transports it, the one to who it has been brought, the one whom serves it, the one who sells it, the one who utilises money from it, the one who buys it and the one who buys it for someone else’. (Sunan Ibn Majah p.242 v.2)
Saaiduna Ibn Umar Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said ‘Every intoxicant is khamr and every intoxicant is forbidden. He who drinks wine in this world and dies while he is addicted to it, not having repented, will not be given a drink in the Hereafter’. (Sunan Ibn Majah p.242 v.2)
Saaiduna Ibn Umar Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said ‘If anyone drinks wine Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days…’ ((Sunan Ibn Majah p.242 v.2)
In regards to your question, try talking to the person and tell him the severity of consuming alcohol and the harms of it medically. Inshallah you will be rewarded for the good advice you are giving to the individual in question.
It is narrated by Tamin Al-Dari Radiallahu Anhu, that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said ‘Religion is nasihah (advice)’; we said ‘To whom?’ The Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalamm said ‘To Allah and His Book, and His Messenger, and to the leaders of the Muslims and their common folk.’ (Sahih Muslim p.54 v.1)
Finally, drinking alcohol is more severe than touching and selling it.
