Controlling sexual desires

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

What methods did the prophet (saws) use to control his sexual desires and can his techniques still be used in this day and age to eradicate lust from the core of man’s hearts?

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

Answer

The Prophet (sallalahu alayhi wa sallam) was the best of men and was an example for everyone. Allah states in the Quran, “You have indeed, in the life of Rasool-Allah, the ‘Best Model’ for him whose hope is in Allah and the Day of the Hereafter, and who engages himself much in the remembrance of Allah.” (Surah Al Ahzab:21)

The Prophet (sallalahu alayhi wa sallam) advised his companies of what to do to control ones sexual desires which is effective to this day and will be to the day of judgement. Abdullah (radi allahu anhu) narrates: ‘We were with the Prophet while we were young and had no wealth whatever. So Allah’s Apostle said, “O young people! Whoever among you can marry, should marry, because it helps him lower his gaze and guard his modesty (i.e. his private parts from committing illegal sexual intercourse etc.), and whoever is not able to marry, should fast, as fasting diminishes his sexual power” ’.  (Sahih Bukhari, 7.4)

And Allah knows best.
