Can women tie their hair with ribbons?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Please clarify that if a woman ties her hair with a hair tie (made of cloth elastic etc), is it that ok? jazaak allah

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

It is strictly prohibited to wear the hair of another human or to join human hair to one’s own hair.

Saaiduna Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said: “Allah has cursed women who joins (her hair or someone else’s) hair (with the hair of another man or a woman) and the woman who asks for her hair to be joined (with the hair of another person)…” (Sahih Bukhari p.879 v.2)

However, if the hair is of plastic or is made out of synthetic fibres then it is permissible. (Umdatul Qari p.64 v.22)

In regards to your question it will be permissible for women to tie their hair with ribbons, elastic etc… It is also a form of beautification, however, care should be taken that beautification is done for one’s husband and not for ghahir mahram men (whom marriage is permissible).
