Are we allowed to wear contact lenses with colour?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DarulIftaBirmingham

Are we allowed to wear contact lenses with colour?
Also why aren’t we allowed to have tattoos?

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

Abdullah Ibn Masood (radi allahu anhu) has narrated that the Prophet of Allah sallal lahu alayhi wa salam said: “Allah’s curse is on those women who practice tattoing and get themselves tattoed and those who remove hair from their faces and those who create spaces between their teeths artificially to look beautiful and those women who change their features created by Allah”… (Sahih Bukhari 7.815)

It is clear from the above Hadith that tattoos are prohibited in Islam as this is considered to be mutilation and to deface the fair nature created by Allah. Allah mentions in Surah al-Nisa the words of Shaytan, when he said: “I will mislead them and I will create in them false desires; I will order them to slit the ears of cattle and to deface the (fair) nature created by Allah…” (Surah An Nisaa: 119)

As for coloured contact lenses, this is considered not to alter the facial expression of a man or woman; hence, it will be permissible for them to wear it as long as it not used to deceive. Furthermore care should be taken by women that it is not worn in front of ghair mahram men.

And Allah knows best.
