Is it permissible to donate to a mosque with a large bank balance?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
Please clarify the following points in the eyes of the holy Quran and Hadith. We have mosques in our towns which are very rich; it has air conditions fixed all around. The mosque has good income sources and has good bank balance, several lakhs. It is kept as it is for several years. The amount is saved in national and non nationalized banks. The banks lend the amount barrowers on interest and earn huge interest amounts. With these healthy financial conditions, still the authorities of mosque are asking the people to give donation. Is it advisable to give donations to such mosques which have huge unwanted bank balance? Please clarify. In this case can the masjid use the funds to which type of services, can they open a hospital and give less chargeable treatments to poor, can the funds be used for opening madrasa, give education to the needy, open college, give donations to poor girls for marriage, give funds for janazah, kafan, dafan expanses, etc. Please clarify.

Answer

(Fatwa: 1906/1470/B=1433)

When the mosque has bank balance of lakhs of rupees then there is no need to receive donations. If the money is more than the need then you can spend it in any other needy mosque with the advice of responsible persons. It is not lawful to open and run hospitals, colleges etc with this money.
