How do I calculate my zakah when my salary fluctuates?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
I am a salaried person and wanted to know how shall I calculate my zakah? Sometimes my account is filled with full salary but sometimes my account becomes nil. Last year after Ramadan I had 20k, next month it became 40k, then it became 1 lakh, then I have to give my father some money and account trembled to 3k only. Next month it got credited by 1.5 lakh, then again 1 lakh, and after that I had to give money again to my father for my marriage and it became nil. Then it started increasing form March onwards. So I want to know in this situation how I shall calculate my zakah. Recently all money I have is form March onwards.

Answer

(Fatwa: 1320/884/H=1433)

Zakah is not wajib only on the amount deposited in the account rather if you have other wealth entitled to zakah then it too shall be calculated while paying zakah. If you have no money and zakah wealth before, then write the day of March on which you had the money along with the Arabic date of the same day and the next year when the same Hijri date of approaches know the ruling of zakah by writing the complete detail of income and expenditure, then in-shaAllah we shall write complete ruling. If this year i.e. 2012 before March you have no money and zakah wealth then it is not wajib on you to pay zakah now.
