Can we give zakah money to Sayyid’s family to help them with daily expenses?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
I have question to ask in my condition, I have sister whose husband is Sayyid and he earns very less with big family and they try to run the family very hardly, and we brothers support her with gift of money also but still they find insufficient. Can we give the zakah money to her because she has kept gold ornaments for her daughter’s marriage, but for their daily expenses they cannot afford. If zakah can be given to her, it will be great help, as we take out the zakah and instead of giving to others can we give it to her to help her?

Answer

(Fatwa: 1479/2007/D=1433)

If your sister is not sahib nisab rather she is poor and entitled to receive zakah and she is not a Sayyid then you may give your zakah money to her, no matter if her husband is a Sayyid while you will be giving to your sister. If the jewelleries which are kept to give to daughters are in the possession of her husband or it has been given in the possession of the daughters and they have been made its owner then the ruling of giving zakah to your sister is the same which we mentioned above. But if the jewelleries are in the possession of your sister then you cannot give your zakah to her (sister).
