Is it appropriate to give aid to the wife of a needy person instead of Syed?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta-Deoband.com
I am President of Khairul ummat Charitable trust and we have recieved a request to extend help to SYED for his cancer treatment. We recieve zakat and sadaqat from members. This aid will go directly to the hospital where he is getting treatment. Will it be appropriate to intend as if the help is given to wife of needy person? (Wife is not Syed) Please reply as soon as possible as it is related with some one’s life and death.

Answer

(Fatwa: 886/735/B=1432)

It is not right to give zakah to a Sayyid. If one gives his zakah to a Sayyid his zakah shall not be paid. Yes, it is right to give this amount to his wife who is not Sayyid, provided she is not owing wealth equal to nisab. But it is makrooh to give zakah amount at one time more than zakah nisab. Hence due to such need you can adopt this method that you give the amount to the wife of Sayyid as debt and then the trust should repay that debt on her behalf.
