Eating Beyond Sehri

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q. If when we wake up for Sehri, then prepare the food to eat, and while eating, the baby wakes up and we need to make her sleep or give her milk. What if the time passes Sehri cut off, are we allowed to eat, or do we need to fast with empty stomachs?

A: If a person eats after the time of Sehri has ended, the fast for that day will not be valid regardless of the reason for missing Sehri. You should adjust your time to accommodate your Sehri and feeding the baby or compulsorily fast without Sehri. It is not permissible to miss a fast just because one did not have Sehri, nor is it permissible to eat after dawn. If one of these two acts occur, you will have to keep Qadhaa for that day.
