Convert and Advice on Marriage

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: I was born Christian but started dating a Muslim woman. I converted to Islam and got engaged to her. We got married 5 months ago. I am now working in Joburg and she lives in Cape Town and it’s a month in which I have not heard anything from my wife. She doesn’t call or sms me. I tried calling and sending an SMS but she doesn’t reply. I went against my family’s wishes and now I feel alone. Please advise. Should I talaq (divorce) her?

A:Our creator Allah Taala has sent us to this world for a short period of time to worship him. He will test us time and again to see how we respond. If we turn to him in the time of difficulty then we have passed our test. Similarly Allah ta’ala is testing you and he wants to see how strong is your belief. Our advice to you is never to leave Islam because of what your wife is doing. Nevertheless you should try and contact her and see what her intentions are. If she is not interested anymore our advice is to give her one talaaq. Maybe Allah will grant you someone better.
