Spouses Communicating after Divorce

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: If a husband gives his wife talaaq (divorce), and she is sitting iddat (wating period), can they still contact each other and speak to each other?

A: Once the husband gives the wife talaaq they are like strangers to each other. Therefore they should not communicate unless it is necessary, with the rules of Hijaab being observed. However if the talaaq is a raji (revocable) talaaq they may communicate within the Iddat period, if he has an intention of taking her back.
