What is Rennet?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: Kindly advise what is the ruling regarding rennin/rennet etc?

A: Rennet is a viscous liquid substance in the stomach of the calf and in the terminology of the Fuqaha (Islamic Jurists) it is deemed a substance which does not have life and is thus not regarded as an intrinsic part of the animal. Rennet derived from non-Halaal slaughtered animals is condoned with the proviso that the animal is of a Halaal specie.
