Definition of Qareen

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: I recently came across some information about a jinnkind called qareen. How authentic is this? Can you please give us some guidance on this.

A: Qareen means companion.

I think that you are referring to the word qareen mentioned in Verse 36 of Surah Zukhruf.

In this verse Allah says that the person who blinds himself and ignores the advices of Rahmaan (Allah), that person will be assigned a qareen, i.e. a companion from among the devils who will discourage him from performing good acts.

So this is not a Jinnkind, rather, it is a companion assigned to a person.

Allah Ta’aala knows best.
