Wearing a Cloak

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: Does a lady have to wear an abaaya (cloak) or can you just wear loose clothing? It doesn’t say anywhere in Quran or hadeeth to wear a abaaya; it just says wear loose clothing, so what is right? Also can you wear a suit to work (females) with a scarf and are you allowed to become an air hostess?

A: Loose fitting clothes will be okay. Loose fitting means that it must not show out the shape and features of the body in any way. This is usually achieved by an Abaaya. Therefore the Abaaya has become a common mode of attire.

A suit will show out the shape of the body.

Air hostess have to deal with male passengers and travel without a Mahram, thus not permissible.

Allah Ta’aala knows best.
