Minimum and Maximum of Menstruation

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: When is it menstruation and when is it istihaaza? What must the amount of days the gap should be? Do you count from day 1 of the cycle or from the day your cycle ends?

A. The minimum time of Haidh (menstruation) is three days (72 hours). Any bleeding lasting for less than three days will be Istihaadhah. The maximum time for Haidh is ten days. Any bleeding over and above ten days will be Istihaadhah, i.e. ten days will be Haidh and the bleeding time after ten days will be Istihaadhah.

The minimum clean time between two Haidh is fifteen days. The clean time will be counted from the time the Haidh ends.

These are the basic laws regarding Haidh. If there is anything in particular that you want to know, feel free to write to us again.
