Working in Bank and Cinema

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: Please can you clarify the Islamic ruling on working in: 1. Bank; 2. As a cashier in a cinema.

A. Employment at a bank should be avoided because of the interest factor at banks. If one is already working in a bank, then while still working there, alternate employment should be sought. As soon as another job becomes available, move on to the new job.

Working in a cinema is not permissible because the income of a cinema is Haraam. If one is already working there then it is Waajib (compulsory) on that person to seek a new job while continuing to work there.

Meanwhile, such a person must keep making Taubah and repenting for the sin of working in a cinema or bank

Allah Ta’aala knows best.
