Bone China Crockery

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: Could you please tell me if plates made of “bone china” or “fine bone china” are ok for Muslims to use to eat from?

A. Bone china crockery is made from cattle bones that have been dried out and then reduced to ash. However, when the bones are burnt to ash then a complete metamorphosis has taken place causing the bone to become ash, which is a Paak and pure substances; thus, it will be permissible to use cups, plates, etc made from bone china. Furthermore, when the bones of dead animals are dried out, they become Paak; so the use of such bones even in their original form is permissible in Shari’ah.
