Gargling while Fasting

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askmufti.co.za

Q: While one is fasting and whether the fast is nafil or farz, if one experiences wet dream or becomes napak then bathing becomes compulsory. While bathing there are three farz and one farz is gargling. If one does not gargle and just takes the water in the mouth three times and spits it out will his gusul be valid or does he have to gargle? It is difficult for water to not go down the throat.

A: When fasting only rinse the mouth (the front), do not gargle (do not take the water towards the throat). If you gargle and water goes down the throat, the fast will break. Also, when taking water into the nose. do not sniff it too high, otherwise the fast will break.
