I am religious but open minded advise about Hijab.

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I have a question. I have been talking to a Muslim guy and he thinks everything is going well. The only concern is that I don’t wear hijaab. He wants my views on it.

I am a religious: I pray 5 times a day, I fast, I don’t backbite, I respect my elders and I try hard to better my iman. Unfortunately I don’t wear hijaab.  I am open minded and it will take sometime to wear it. What should I do? I want to marry him but I am worried he will not want to be with me because I am not wearing it right now. How should I address this concern to him? I do not want to let go of him but I don’t want him to think I’ll wear it just to be with him either. I don’t know how to address the hijaab issue with him because I am afraid I’ll lose him if I say I am not ready yet. What is your advice?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Sister in Islam,

You are religious and it is pleasing to note you have the zeal and enthusiasm to better your Imaan.

It is possible that you think it is permissible for you to talk to the boy in reference. We advise you that it is irreligious to talk to the boy and infact a sin. You should desist from talking to him.

Allah Taala is Al Shakur (very appreciative) and He appreciates when his servants fulfil His orders. It is the blessings of such deeds that Allah creates means for a person to get close to Him. It is compulsory for a woman to observe hijab and it is possible that Allah Taala is making the boy a means for you to start observing the hijab. This is a means created by Allah Taala. Appreciate the means and use it as an opportunity to observe the order of hijab which is referred to in the Quraan:

يَاأَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُلْ لِأَزْوَاجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَاءِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِنْ جَلَابِيبِهِنَّ

O prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers that they should draw down their shawls over them. (Al Ahzaab-59)

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
