Encountering obstacles from becoming a Hāfidh

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

1.I always wanted to be a Quran Hafiz because I want high stages in Paradise. But unfortunately when I start reading Quran esp Sura Baqarah, my back starts to hurt a lot and I continue reading. I am very disappointed that Allah has not given me this opportunity to become a Quran Hafiz, now I feel like I am not destined to have a high position in paradise as a Hafiz would.

2.My body starts to shake when I am in tashadud in namaz, what is the meaning of this? Once I saw the Prophet Muhammad in a dream and I asked its intrepretation from a scholar they told me to recite durood excessively. Does it mean if I read durood excessively I would reach the same position as a Hafiz would in paradise or is the position of a Hafiz much greater than one who recites durood excessively?

Jizakallah.

Answer

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

(1) Your zeal and enthusiasm to become a Hāfidh of Qur’ān is commendable and praiseworthy.

Respected brother, in general, it is very important to have a correct attitude and mindset regarding how things transpire in this world. It is an integral part of our Īmān to accept the decree and decision of Allah Ta‘āla in all matters, whether it be good or bad. Allah Ta‘āla alone knows what is beneficial and harmful to His creations and none can question that. A person may or may not understand the wisdom behind the decisions of Allah Ta‘āla nor is the person obliged to do so.

As such, it is inappropriate to make a comment such as: “I am very disappointed that Allah has not given me this opportunity to become a Quran Hafiz”. One should be careful from uttering such comments. Tawbah and istighfār should be made from doing so.

Nonetheless, you have not given much details of the reason why you are unable to become a Hāfidh and how exactly it involves hurting your back. Therefore, we do not understand how it is not possible for you to pursue your goal of becoming a Hāfidh. Have you consulted a doctor regarding this issue? Did the doctor suggest a method in which you can recite the Qur’ān and not cause any pain to the back?

(2) Consult a doctor to figure out why your body is shaking during salāh.

Reciting durūd abundantly upon Rasulullāh (sallAllāh ‘alayhi wa sallam) is praiseworthy and an act of immense reward. However, while the status of the one who recites durūd abundantly and the status of a Hāfidh of Qur’ān is very virtuous in the eyes of Allāh Ta‘āla, they are not the same in their greatness.

And Allah Ta‘āla Knows Best
