Revised Oath on Quran etc

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

my question has 2 parts so firstly if someone has lied by holding Quran in his hand. What’s the kaffarah for that? Also if some one says by Allah I will not do this bad thing ( taking Allah’s qasm) and then cannot stop himself from doing this bad thing..has he broken that oath? If he has what’s the ?kaffarah? And also what’s the consequences if this happens quite a few times.. I mean his intention is right, he wants to stop himself from committing a sin so just to motivate himself he takes Allah’s qasm.. But ends up breaking it…

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

  1. The Qur’an is the word of Allah Ta’ala. It deserves the outmost respect. Taking an oath while holding the Qur’an is to emphasize that one is truthful. It is totally unbecoming of a Muslim to speak lies while holding the Qur’an and claiming that he is truthful. This is as if one is using the Qur’an to justify his lie. This is a major sin. One should sincerely repent to Allah, and refrain from this act in the future.
  1. It should be borne in mind that one should not haphazardly take oaths by Allah as is the habit of people nowadays. However, if one has taken an oath, he should try his outmost to honour the oath. Nonetheless, if one has failed to honour the oath, the kaffarah will be as follows:
    1. Feeding ten poor people two average meals, or
    2. Clothing ten poor people that which is sufficient to conceal their bodies.

Only when one is unable to fulfil any of the above due a valid reason, one will be permitted to fast for three consecutive days.[1]
