Sterling Silver Ring for Men

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I wanted to get some clarity regarding men wearing Sterling Silver rings. I checked around and companies don’t offer regular silver rings…only Sterling Silver. Would it be permissible for men to wear Sterling Silver? if not what about Stainless Steel rings? Is their a specific material the ring must not exceed to be considered permissible?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, men can wear only silver/sterling silver ring or a ring which is plated with silver[1].

Therefore, it is permissible for men to wear sterling silver ring[2] as long as the silver in the ring weighs 4.374 grams or less[3].

It is not permissible for men to wear stainless steel ring[4]

[2] Sterling silver is an alloy created when copper is added to pure silver in order to make the resulting compound more durable and less soft.

Usually, sterling silver has a purity of 92.5%, meaning that 7.5% of the alloy is made of copper or another metal (usually nickel or zinc).
