Is going to the dargah and bowing down one’s head and asking for intersection kufar?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Going to a dargah and bowing the head there at the grave and asking for intercession is kufr (as far as I know) does this take one out of the fold of islam ?and is the nikah to be renewed(main question) ?and can you explain me in detail what makes a person kaafir when one agoes to a dargah ?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The purpose of visiting a grave yard is to remind oneself of the reality of death and to prepare for death.[1] If a person visits a dargah and bows his head to the deceased or directly asks for intercession from the deceased then, this act will be regarded as shirk.

 Shirk is of two types:

1. Shirk Ietiqadi (Shirk in belief): To worship anyone besides Allah or to regard anyone as a partner to Allah Taala in His attributes or in His worship for example, if one prostrates to anyone else besides Allah with the intention of worshiping that person or item, as is the practice of polytheists and idol worshipers then, this is kufr and one will leave the fold of Islam.

 2. Shirk Amali (Shirk in practice): This type of shirk is not shirk in disbelief but it is shirk by way of imitating the actions of the polytheists and idol worshippers, which is haram. However, such shirk does not lead one out of the fold of Islam. For example if one prostrates to anyone other than Allah with the intention of greeting or by way of reverence and not for worship, it is haram and a major sin. However, such a person does not leave the fold of Islam. [2]

In the above enquired situation, if one did Shirk Ietiqadi then, this is kufr and will require one to renew his/her Imaan and nikah. However, if the act perpetrated is Shirk Amali as explained above then, this is a major sin, but this act will not expel one from hisher Imaan.  Therefore, there is no need to renew ones Imaan or nikah. [3]However, tawbah and istighfaar should be done.
