Is applying mehendi on ones feet a Hindu custom?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Please tell me if appllying mehendi on the feet is a hindu custom. Is there any juziya that prohibits it?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, it is permissible and in fact advisable for women to apply mehendi (hina) for tazyeen (beautification). [1]

It is not permissible for a man to apply mehendi except in one’s hair and beard. [2]If a man applies mehendi to any other part of his body e.g. the hands or legs, then this will be in the ambit of tashabuh bin nisaa (imitating women) which is impermissible. [3]

It has become a norm in hot countries such as India and Pakistan for men to apply mehendi at the bottom of their feet to overcome the burning sensation in their feet. There is leeway to do so as this will be regarded as a form of medication and not tazyeen (beautification). [4] Ideally, it would be better for men to use alternate medication besides mehendi. [5]
