Zakat on gold crown tooth

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

Does a person have to pay zakat on gold teeth which one has in his mouth, like filling, or a crown tooth?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We have consulted our dentist, Hafiz Younus Desai (Shifaa Hospital Durban). Hereunder is his response:

“Gold teeth are not temporary but are permanent. Temporary teeth are made with plastic like material. Gold is the best filling material but due to its aesthetics it is not very widely used as previously .There are two types of gold. One is genuine gold and the other fool’s gold  or non precious gold  commonly called npg. For crowns the labs use 18 carat gold as 24 carat is too soft. Nowadays with the high price of gold most labs are using npg. Gold slits are made with npg or 24 carat gold but this is very rare due to cost factors. Silver crowns are not genuine silver but silver in colour.”

Accordingly, zakat will not be wajib (necessary) on gold teeth.[1]
