I’m a Muslim girl and I have an issue. I once went to a school party with my friends and took pictures using a digital cameta. Though the pictures were taken, they werent printed, just saved. I’ve never taken pictures before and this was my first time. When my parents found out that I had taken pictures, they were really upset and claimed that scholars from your website prohibited taking pictures. I further argued with them, saying that no non-mahram would see them and the pictures would not be printed, in which case, it would be haram. They did not listen to me and stopped me from going to school. I cannot study any further because of this issue and I’m still only in 12th grade. Please tell me if what I did was haram so that I can show this to my parents.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
You are most fortunate to have parents who are concerned about your Deen and Taqwa. Their attitude towards you is based on their love for you. Our advice is you trust in their love for you and co-operate with them in inculcating Taqwa and piety in yourself. It is not appropriate for us to issue a fatwa in your favour as this will be counterproductive to your parents motive in nurturing you.
There are many fatwas on our website regarding digital photography. [1] In the meanwhile, make dua to Allah Taala to guide you towards what would be best for you.

قد اختلف العلماء في جواز التصوير بالكاميرا.قال بعضهم انه يجوز وقال الاخرون لا. فتامل[1]
القائلون بالجواز:
أما التلفزيون والفيديو فلا شك في حرمة استعمالها بانظر الى مايشتملان عليه من المنكرات الكثيرة…ولكن هل ياتي فيهما حكم التصوير بحيث اذا كان التلفيزيون أو الفيديو خاليا من هذه المنكرات بأسرها هل يحرم بانظر الى كونه تصويرا؟فان لهذا العبد الضعيفعفا الله عنه فيه وقفة وذالك لان الصورة المحرمة ما كانت منقوشة أو منحوتة بحيث يصبح لها صفة الاستقرار على شيئ وهي الصورة التي كان الكفار يستعملونها للعبادة أما الصورة التي ليس لها ثبات واستقرار وليست منقوشة على شيئ بصفة دائمة فانها بالظل أشبه منها بالصورة. فان كانت صور الانسان حية بحيث تبدوا على الشاشة في نفس الوقت الذي يظهر الانسان أمام الكاميرا فان الصورة لاتستقر على الكاميرا ولا على الشاشة وانما هي اجزاء كهربائية تنتقل من الكامير الى الشاشة وتظهر عليها بترتيب الاصلي ثم تنفى وتزول…فتنزيل هذه الصورةمنزلة الصورة المستقرة مشكل(فتح الملهم ج5 ص98 دار القلم)
