Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

The religious beliefs held by the majority of Shī‘ah today – i.e. the Imāmī Ithnā ‘Ashariyyah – consist of beliefs that are kufr. For example:

The Belief in Tahrīf & Incompleteness of the Qur’ān

It is a common Shī‘ah belief that the Qur’ān in its present form is distorted & incomplete[1]. This is a belief of kufr. It is necessary to believe the Qur’ān is complete in the form we have it.

Al-Tabrasī (d. ca. 620 H), a famous Shī‘ī mufassir, said in his book al-Ihtijāj:

ولو شرحت لك كلما أسقط وحرف وبدل مما يجري هذا المجرى لطال، وظهر ما يحظر التقية إظهاره من مناقب الأولياء ومثالب الأعداء

“Were I to explain to you everything that has been omitted, manipulated and changed [in the Qur’ān] of which falls on this pattern, it would indeed become lengthy; and that which taqiyyah (dissimulation) forbids disclosure of would be revealed, in terms of the merits of the saints and the faults of the enemies.” (al-Ihtijāj, pp. 377-8)

Fayd al-Kāshānī (d. 1091), a Shī‘ī muhaddith, said in his al-Tafsīr al-Sāwī after quoting many narrations on alleged distortions in the Qur’ān from primary Shi‘i references, like the tafsīr of ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm al-Qummī (d. 307) and al-Kāfī of Muhammad ibn Ya‘qūb al-Kulenī (d. 328 H/329 H):

“I say: What is learnt from the summation of these reports and other than them from the narrations through the route of Ahul Bayt is that the Qur’ān which is before us is not in its completion as it was revealed to Muhammad – Allāh bless him and grant him peace. Some of it is contrary to what Allāh sent down and some of it is altered and distorted, and many things have been omitted from it, amongst which is the name of ‘Alī in many places, and amongst which are other things. And it is also [learnt] that it is not on the sequence preferred by Allāh and His Messenger – Allāh bless him and grant him peace. This was professed by ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm.” (al-Tafsīr al-Sāfī, 1:49)

‘Alī ibn Ibrāhim al-Qummī (d. 307 H) is one of the famous early mufassirs of the Shī‘ī sect. Hence, major scholars of the Shī‘ī school, both early and late, held these beliefs.

Attacking Abū Bakr and ‘Umar (radiyAllāhu ‘anhumā)

Abū Bakr and ‘Umar (radiyAllāhu ‘anhumā) were two of the foremost companions of the Prophet (sallAllāhu ‘alayhi wasallam). Their sacrifice, courage and support for the dīn is amongst the most established of historical realities. Moreover, the Prophet’s (sallAllāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) approval of them, and his glad tidings to them of jannah, reaches us through an overwhelming number of reports that cannot be denied. Denial of them amounts to disbelief. The Shī‘ah generally believe that Abū Bakr and ‘Umar (radiyAllāhu ‘anhumā) were hypocrites (munāfiqs) and are destined to the Hellfire, and they condone cursing and insulting them. The scholars of Ahlus Sunnah have stated that this also is kufr.[2]

Other Beliefs

There are other heretical beliefs adopted by many Shī‘ah, including that ‘Ā’ishah (radiyAllāhu ‘anhā) was not innocent of the accusations of zinā made against her[3] and the 12 Shī‘ah Imāms from the Ahlul Bayt are superior to the lesser prophets of the Israelites.

Conclusion

Since the beliefs described above represent the dominant Shī‘ah beliefs, the Shī‘ah sect cannot in general be regarded as a group of believers. Rather, they are considered “zindīqs” (heretics).[4] Hence, the default ruling in today’s time with regards to Shī‘ah Imāmiyyah Ithnā ‘Ashariyyah is that they are disbelievers. However, if certain individuals belonging to the group clearly profess Islāmic beliefs and renounce the heretical beliefs of the Shī‘ah, some of which have been recounted above, they will be regarded as Muslims.
